Drawing Materials

  • 3.5 foot plumb line (tie a fishing weight or small key to a 3' long string)
  • ruler or level.
  • black mirror (available through the studio)
  • small rectangular mirror (information provided at studio)
  • 24" by 36" drawing board, 3/4" thick (not masonite, no handles).
  • Canson charcoal paper
  • Carta Roma charcoal paper
  • Nitram Charcoal sticks, six packets of each grade
  • kneadable eraser
  • masking tape
  • tortillons (blending stubs)
  • sandpaper block

Escoda Artists Brushes

All bristle brushes should be the Escoda 4729 line - filberts:

  • Purchase at least two of each of the following sizes: 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.  This is purely a skeleton crew sized collection, but it will get you started.
  • Also get a few 1 and 2 sized rounds.

Additional Artists' Tools

  • attachable palette cups with screw-on lids (not the tiny variety)
  • palette knife for mixing colors.  I use a 2.25" long blade, rounded at the tip.
  • mahl stick
  • silicon coil brush cleaner (can be found at most any art store)
  • odorless mineral spirits (you can purchase a gallon from a harware store, Home Depot or Lowes)
  • paper towels (blue shop towels) can be purchased from Home Depot or Lowes -- look like paper towels but are more absorbant).
