Learn the four stages of developing an underpainting using the Verdaccio underpainting technique in preparation for final glazing.

This historic method builds depth, modifies color and  luminosity.  The Verdaccio method creates an excellent underpainting for skin tones and can result in a striking impression of realism and life-force.

The Four Stages of Verdaccio is a program developed as part of the Painting the Figure in Oils curriculum taught by award winning naturalistic painter Adrian Gottlieb.  This course focuses exclusively on figure and portrait painting.

Adrian Gottlieb paints along with his small, intimate classes, ensuring close interaction and a more spontaneous response to student needs and critiques.

                                         Schedule

  • Day 1:       Begin with painting the color study
  • Days 2-3:  Focus on drawing the figure onto the final
                     canvas
  • Day 4:       The piambura (the white base) is painted
  • Days 5-9:  Dedicated to the main verdaccio underpainting
  • Day 10:     The final glaze.

The emphasis of the Verdaccio oil painting approach is a concentration on the various layering methods used in painting the figure, and understanding what makes an ideal underpainting in preparation for subsequent glazing.

In combination with other methods such as straight-color, grisaille and even alla prima in certain cases, the lessons from this class will provide you with a valuable skill set that will enhance your oil painting repertoire considerably.

A single long pose will be used through the duration of the semester.  Models return each session to pose in the same position (conforming to the original pose in every detail) for the full ten sessions.

The course concentrates on the use of the limited palette.

  • Two totally separate but identical 10 week long classes running parallel are offered on Thursdays and Saturdays. Some students choose to enroll in both classes.
